How can a former oil exploration geologist have the experience and skills to help you and your organisation thrive?

Working as an oil exploration geologist in remote areas of West Africa is not the place most professionals would think of to learn and start to master the skills of leadership. But Roger credits this early experience as the foundation for his work today as an executive coach, conference speaker and seminar leader.

Between West Africa and the Boardrooms Roger works in today he has conducted business in over 40 countries. Roger believes that each person has extraordinary untapped potential that he or she can learn to access and, in so doing, achieve their true potential and make a greater contribution to their organisations.

It is his combination of rich international experience, successful business track record, and passion to learn and ask challenging questions that helps him thrive in his day-to-day work.

In the last few years he has worked with clients like Accenture, Cisco, Eon, IBM, OMD, SAP, Shell International and Siemens, as well as ambitious smaller companies. Roger's work has been featured in the international business press and on the BBC.

What is most important to him is: integrity, constantly learning so he can further improve as a professional, working with a diverse range of clients both in the UK and internationally who appreciate the importance of personal and leadership development, seeing his clients flourish as a result of an executive coaching programme or hearing that they found his keynote or seminar entertaining, informative and inspiring.

Rich experience:

Roger was educated at a secondary modern school in Portsmouth (a naval port on the south coast of England). The highest career expectation set by the school was to gain an apprenticeship at the local dockyard. However, Roger owes thanks to two teachers who inspired and guided him during these formulate years. He became the first pupil from his school to attend university for many years. He gained a BSc Honours degree in Geology and an MSc degree in Oceanography.

Roger's early career was spent in countries like Gabon and Guinea Bissau working as an oil exploration geologist for Amoco and Burmah Oil. While his peers from university were following classic management training schemes in the UK, he met African government ministers who proudly showed him the bullet marks on their ministry building from their colonial battles; witnessed a failed coup d'etat and travelled to beautiful unspoilt places where tourists never venture. This experience helped satisfy his desire to travel and meet a diverse range of people. However, he felt blocked in a technical career and decided to gain an MBA degree from Cranfield School of Management as a stepping-stone into business.

Following business school his career focus was in marketing, global business development and building relationships in the Boardrooms of his clients. He gained experience working in roles such as:

  • Chase Manhatten Bank as an Operations Manager merging conflicting cultures following the acquisition of two British stockbrokers.
  • Britannia Airways (Thompson Travel) as their first ever Marketing Manager, and successfully launched their first 'no-frills' low cost scheduled service.
  • Country Manager - USA and Global Accounts Director with Amadeus IT during the firms rapid international expansion in Europe, USA and Asia.
  • Principal Consultant in Korn/Ferry International's European operation.
  • International Business Development VP with iXL.
He has conducted business in Europe, Africa, North & South America and Asia Pacific, and lived in New York, Copenhagen, Libreville, London and Madrid.

He established his business in 2001 to satisfy his passion developing inspirational leaders and helping people overcome the challenges they face in business and raise their game.

He wrote his first book ‘The Key Account Manager's Pocketbook' while he was still working for a company. This book has gone on to become an international bestseller. His latest book, "What Can Chief Executives Learn From Stand-up Comedians? was launched in 2009 and has been featured in Forbes and The Sunday Times.

Today, Roger lives in London UK and works worldwide with CEOs, senior executives and managers.

A strong believer in life long learning, in September 2010 Roger will commence part-time studies for his fourth degree - a Masters degree in Applied Positive Psychology.
