I'm sure we have all attended conferences and seen some really outstanding speakers. But I'm equally confident we have been disappointed with the performance of others.

I remember back when I had a corporate job attending meetings that could have been so much more effective if the company had invested in bringing in a professional seminar leaders to bring the event to life.

But how do you find these really outstanding speakers?

The type of speakers who achieve 10 out of 10 on their evaluation forms and get outstanding testimonials from their clients.

Well here are seven criteria you can use to ensure you select an outstanding conference speaker or seminar leader for your next event.

1. Is their talk 100% business relevant? This may seem a blinding glimpse of the obvious but do make sure their talk is relevant to the challenges you face and is tailored to your specific needs. A great talk must provide practical insights the audience can use in their day-to-day work to be more effective.

2. Are they credible? What does their client list look like? What size audience are they most comfortable with? What level of experience or seniority is their typical audience?

3. Where are the facts & figures? Exposing ideas is all well and good, but find out whether they are going to provide some evidence (otherwise they may be shot down in flames by an audience question).

4. What's their style? No one likes to be lectured, but then on the other hand you don't want to invest in a showman. An outstanding speaker can engage their entire audience from the very start and peppers their talk with relevant stories. The audience remembers these stories and the meaning behind them.

5. What do people say about them? Read their testimonials and also speak to a few of their client's. A good speaker will welcome you talking to their clients.

6. Do they have real business experience? Find out whether they have real experience working in world-class organisations. You don't want a speaker who can't relate to the real world.

7. What's the added-value? Find out whether the speaker will allow audience members to contact them with questions after the event and will they provide you with a summary?
